In 1799, the Russian America fur company settled in Sitka until the Tlingit fought and defeated them. Then, the Tlingit people rebuilt in 1804. Russia then sold Alaska to the US without the Tlingit's' consent.
Potlatching and spirit dancing were banned between 1884-1951.
