The Tlingit boys and girls, of course, had different responsibilities to fill. When 8 years old, boys go to live with their mother's brother to learn his responsibilities around the house and o learn how to hunt. They came of age when the had shot and killed their first game animal.
Girls came of age when they hit puberty. Then her father's sister came to live with them for a certain time to watch over and help teach the girl, along with her own grandmother, her tradition and responsibilities around the house for 8 days. A high ranked girl was taught for 2 years and then had an arranged marriage.
